  2. Did a trackback. This is guerrilla marketing for sure. Makes ya wonder though. Just how straight can a vodka besoted fool shoot anyways?

  3. Thanks.

A comment on the blog this was found summed it up well…

    “Come take it.”

The sad thing is—they’re working on it.

everyone is missing it here- open your closed, little minds a bit…do you really get what “the absoult world” campaign is all about??? this is being presented from a mexican’s perspective, what THEIR absolut world would look like.

oh, well – leave it to american’s to get worked up…but atleast you’re talking about it – GREAT CAMPAIGN!

cheers! as i lift my glass of absolut, the best in the world.

  6. “…this is being presented from a mexican’s perspective, what THEIR absolut world would look like.”

That’s why it’s written in Spanish, right?

    Oh wait….

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spanish is the predominant language of Mexico and de facto official language.

I guess men should be outraged by the ad running in America – that which depicts a pregnant man – sounds like an absolut world to me ;)

  9. Maybe you should lay off the sauce for the rest of the day, because you aren’t making much sense anymore.

“THE RED PILL…Again, open your closed, little minds”

For starters, I only have 1 mind. Perhaps all that vodka has split yours.

“That’s why it’s written in Spanish, right?”
“Spanish is the predominant language of Mexico and de facto official language.”

Thank you for making my point. Spanish is the language of Mexico. So if an ad is supposedly being presented to Mexicans from a Mexican standpoint, why is the message of the ad written in English?

“I guess men should be outraged by the ad running in America – that which depicts a pregnant man”

Despite the fact that many are disturbed by the ad you are referring to, this really isn’t a fair connection. Women are not launching campaigns to force men into pregnancy. However, there are major campaigns in America and Mexico that are calling for the very thing the Aztlan ad is depicting.

  10. absolut lover said

i rest my case, without opening your mind, u will never get this. absolut pushes the envelope once again, causing people to step out of their comfort zone. THIS AD WAS NOT INTENDED FOR AN AMERICAN TARGET MARKET HERE FOLKS< they are speaking from the perspective of the TARGET MARKET…

so sad that u can’t get it – it is such a superior campaign – go with it people!!!

The target market for the American ad is women, those who are well educated and can afford a high end product, ones that would get a kick out of seeing a few preggers men carry the weight.

sorry u just don’t get it – but again, we’re talking about it – amazing marketing going on!!

America and their borders, their wars, their causes – loosen up people, loosen up ;)

  11. absolut lover said

btw, have you REALLY looked at the AD???

  12. Evidently, the only way I can “get” what you are saying is to consume large quantities of vodka.

“THIS AD WAS NOT INTENDED FOR AN AMERICAN TARGET MARKET HERE FOLKS< they are speaking from the perspective of the TARGET MARKET”

THEN WHY ISN’T THE AD WRITTEN IN THE LANGUAGE OF ITS TARGET MARKET?

Have you really looked at the ad? Or do you not know the difference between English and Spanish?

  13. For your claim to hold as much water as you obviously can hold of vodka, the ad would need to say this:

    En un mundo Absolut

    Nice try, though.

  14. absolut lover said

the reference to the campaign is in ENGLISH my friend, the controversial part of the ad, should be the fact that THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and other geographic notations are in SPANISH!!!

The map people, THE MAP, the part of the ad that would be considered an ABSOLUT WORLD by those in Mexico is presented in Spanish – Estado Unidos De America.

I wonder why, on a page that encourages open dialogue that you getting so offensive in your remarks. I am not under the influence of anything other than an openminded point of view, you should try it. I now realize by previous postings that the American border and immigration is a “touchy” subject with you. Therefore, it is reasonable that this topic would provoke such emotion.

I think the purpose of the ad is to get Mexicans to share in the delight of a wonderful product – not to deminish the size/power of America. However, American’s have a hard time stepping outside of issues they find threatening or over ones head. This ad falls into the “over ones head” category – however, it would be demoralizing to admit that about ones self so it is seen as a threat.

    best of luck to you.

  15. Why am I being offensive?

“open your closed, little minds a bit”
“THE RED PILL…Again, open your closed, little minds”

You get what you give around here. My mind may be closed, but it is not little.

Now if you would like to continue the conversation without insulting me, I will return the favor.

  16. Now yes, I realize that part of the ad is in Spanish. It is the very fine print that nobody ever looks at, and the very faded print on the map.

However, the entire point of the ad is written in English. If the ad is supposed to target Mexicans in Mexico, why is the slogan not in a language they can understand? Heck, there are millions of Hispanics in America that can’t understand English. What makes Absolut think that story would be different in Mexico?

  17. absolut lover said

I and many others think it to be a wonderful campaign – we are not restricted by a thought process based on power, greed, fear – but creativity, pushing the envelope. Wouldn’t you admitt that the geographic depiction would be an “absolut world” to some living in Mexico??? If so, you can for an instance realize what great marketing is about.

absolut prevails in this area once again – amazing,eh?

you admit to being closed minded, w/ any affliction that is the first step in recovery – the realization that you have a problem :) LOL!! and i will give it to you, your mind seems to be of pretty good size as you are able to articulate your feelings very well ;) however, I am still convinced that you are missing the bigger picture here, like most Americans have and will continue to do.

i still like the ad, i get it, it makes me chuckle. and btw, i am a proud american – who is a citizen of the world, not limited by borders, or idealogies that fog intelligent thinking.

i am sure that your “boycott” will have very litte effect on absolut’s success – they’ll replace your sales w/ that of a mexican that can get a good ad campaign.

again, best wishes to you as this is my last post.

My open letter to Pernod Ricard, owners of Absolut…

Perhaps you wanted a controversy to mark your purchase of Absolut.
Well, congratulations, you now have irrevocably angered every Californian I know and most Americans as well.

Your vulgar, hurtful ad showing that in ‘your world’ Mexico will conquer the western USA feeds a dangerous seccesionist movement among the millions of illegal Mexican aliens who have entered the USA and who are eager to claim our land for Mexico. It could well lead to violence in the streets, the deaths of children, and potentially a civil war. If you think this is an exaggeration then you do not understand the real situation on the streets.

If you do not know about the effects of certain messeges upon susceptible masses on the streets then you should not be so reckless. If you are aware of what you have done then you are simply evil.

Pehaps I can show you what you have done: Imagine a major US-based firm launching an ad campaign aimed at muslims in France and North Africa using a picture of the Notre Dame Catherdral after it was converted into a mosque with the caption “Francostan, its yours for the taking”. Do you think the real French citizens may find that offensive? Do you think sales of that US product may fall in France after such a hateful and incindiary ad?

About 45% of Absolut sales (on unit basis) are in the USA. As word of your divisive and ll-conceived ad spreads you can expect official boycotts and significant reductions in sales. I for one will never buy Absolut again. Last year I bought three bottles.

Furthermore, I will also boycott all products from Pernod Ricard, V&S, Fortune Brands, and Future Brands. I will encourage your US distributors to shun your business and let them know that everything they sell will be boycotted as long as they carry Absolut. To the extent I can (by personal contact and through web outlets) I will urge all others to join in the boycott. Tonight the blogs are abuzz and the anger is already at a boiling point – that is how I was first alerted to your diabolic blunder.

Your plan may be to purposely lose sales in the US in order to gain sales in Mexico. Time will tell how that works for you. I suspect any gains in Mexico will not offset the losses from your largest single market, the USA. I know for a fact I have much more discretionary income than most Mexicans and I can assure Mr. Patrick Ricard that he will never again get any of it.

Perhaps if you pull all these disgusting and dangerous ads immediately and issue a formal apology I may eventually reconsider, but much damage has already been done.

  22. Buck Frain said

For someone who claims to have a tertiary education you seem awfully proud of your ignorance. I don’t know whether you’ve intentionally misunderstood the ad to make a racist point or whether you’re just a bit simple. For a student of history you seem to be specialising in History As Written In The USA. Your blog is pretty xenophobic, perhaps you should change its name to “The Red Neck”.

  23. piimakoer said

I think the reason the most important part of the ad is in English is so that the word “Absolut” would figure in the middle of the picture and draw attention to it. If the phrase would be in Spanish and, as the Red Pill said, would be “En un mundo Absolut” the word being advertised would be on the side and would not immediately receive the amount of attention it is expected to.

I could be wrong, but it just popped into my mind.

  24. Daryl said

Of course, you do realize that the western portion of the US used to be part of Mexico. Cracking open a history book might enlighten you a bit.

  25. Queen Supreme said

Wow…you guys are really closed minded about this add, and really quick to jump to the conclusion that it’s an anti-american ad. Honestly, the first thing I thought of when I saw the ad was Spring Break. In an ‘Absolut World’ Mexico would be bigger and extend up into the US so more people could party. That’s what I thought of.

But I really do think the ad is supposed to simply be humorous, and yes, I do think it’s supposed to be an Mexican Ad campain. If you look in the bottom left hand coner of the the, it’s got words in Spanish. It’s OBVIOUSLY a Mexican ad. So stop being ignorant and realize not everyone outside the US thinks the US is great. So an add like this is funny to them. No harm, no foul.

  26. Queen Supreme said

And also, I’d just like to add that I think your ‘better’ version of the ad is far more offensive.

  27. Mojo Rising said

I think we can compromise here. Tell you what, you can have San Francisco, LA, Berkeley, Portland, and Seattle. We’ll repay the favor by continuing to import your poor people. We take on your liabilities, you take on ours- sounds fair to me.

  28. Mojo Rising said

Wait, we’ll keep Portland because its pretty and we like to fish.

  29. That just goes to show that what is offensive is relative to who is viewing it. I am offended by an ad that gives the state I live in to Mexico.

Daryl, the key portion in your statement is “used to.” Maybe you should crack open a History book to see how it turned out. Even an Atlas would do.

It seems there are a lot of folks that don’t understand what the big deal is.

We call it “Hispandering.” Of course, we don’t believe that Absolut really wants the fantasy of Aztlan to become a reality. What we do believe is that Absolut is willing to offend many Americans in order to sell their product to Mexicans. That is a trade-off they have chosen to make. Now they can accept the repercussions of that decision.

  30. humanitarian2112 said

    EDIT: Moved to correct article.

they have the non apology up on the absolut blog.

We Americans are just not astute enough to understand the intent of advertising. You see, they wouldn’t ever think of running an ad like this in the U.S.

To be honest not too many people pay attention in history class anymore. Absolut Lover is correct, but only partially. This ad plays to the fact that the 1800’s American philosophy of Manifest Destiny was disrespectful and indeed harmful to the other cultures that existed in the regions that were taken over. Mexico looked roughly like it does in the ad prior to American expansion west. Effectively America stole this land through the use of force and this ad points out that many Mexicans are still sore about that.

  33. America did not steal anything from Mexico except for maybe our love for tacos.

That land was bought and paid for as part of the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo, which brought an official end to the Mexican-American War.

I find it impossible to believe that most AMERICANS would not find this ad the most offensive thing imaginable.

We are fighting out own little war here in AMERICA. There are more Illegal Aliens [mostly Mexican], living, working, taxing the system without paying taxes in the area pictured in the ad then there are CITIZENS in the entire hermetically sealed country of Sweden, where I understand Absolut is made.

I’ve been in marketing for years.
    This was no “history lesson”
This is guerilla marketing…using a brand to unite the disgruntled.
Look where the agency is located. This was intentional.
    This is terrorist marketing.
Go after a sore point, rub their faces in it, and blame everyone else for the situation they find themselves in.
There was no humor in this ad…not to any Mexican, because they take this “history” very seriously. Even now they talk of “taking back” what they think is theirs.
Certainly not to Americans, who are collapsing under the weight of taxes to provide services to the illegal population.
This campaign gave Absolut tons of publicity, but lost them more in market share. Sorry, you can give every Mexican a bottle of Absolut every day, and they will still not equal the consumption of American consumers.
    It was stupid.
There should have been an apology, but the real feelings of those writing this campaign are too evident.

Absolut Lover has tried very hard to defend the indefensible.
In marketing, there are good ideas, and bad ideas…in an attempt to gain brand loyalty, Absolut may have gained many disgruntled Mexicans, but they have forever lost favor with nearly every American who has seen this ad.

Their new ad should now be a large lemon, with a map of Mexico on it and the words, “En un mundo Absolut”.
Do I blame them for going after specific demographics?
    Of course not!
But in a world where it is hard enough to unite people, this ad was targeting Mexican Pride, appealing to the hurt, the anger and the rage.
Just what we need more of, anger and rage.
And there will be plenty of Mexican’s who will be offended by the ad.
They know the history, and it was not a happy one. To force them to remember defeat, and loss is humiliating.
Absolut’s ad agency has used their own prejudices to create an ad that is not just insulting to every Mexican and American, its stupid.
I’d be saying “hasta la vista baby” to their agency post haste.

Nice job Absolut…you must have been drinking when you made the decision to run that ad.

Maybe a few folks in Germany and Russia believe in an Absolut Europe that would have Sweden under Nazi rule or perhaps the Communist USSR – and I believe those regimes came later than 1848 Mexico. As far as basic target marketing – why would Absolut even target a native Mexican audience? Yeah I am sure Paco and Juan are contemplating their next Absolut martini with a twist. Retards.

Leave your politics to your side of the pond.

Any one who says this is just advertising to a certain vodka market is just out of the loop. The boycott represents all of the organizations in the coalition and their outrage at Absolut’s ad campaign. As a marketing professional I’m appalled at the stupidity of this ad. They should fire the ad agency who put this together as well as anyone within the company who approved the ad. Can you imagine the uproar if they published an “In An Absolut World” ad in the Arab world showing a Middle East without Israel? How about an ad in Germany with a map of the Third Reich at its greatest extent?

Absolut has just revealed themselves to be part of the America-hater crowd. I wonder if the Mexicans will buy enough vodka to make up for what they lost in US business. I just flushed the last of my Absolut down the toilet and I won’t be buying it in the future. By the way, Cold River Vodka is a superior product and is made right here in Maine, USA!

This campaign doesn`t surprise me in the least given where it is coming from. Swedes have been famous for asking, “Adolf may I get you a tonic?” Anyone who was in WWII can tell you Swedes were only too happy to accomodate the Nazis. Should this inflammatory ad surprise us? No. Given Swedens behavior in the war anything is o.k.. Inga you look a bit Aryan, how much for your daughter?

I not only find this add offensive, but dangerous. It inflames anti-American feelings and long standing feelings of victimization on behalf of Mexican citizens. One wonders how it would make Latin Americans feel if the same add showed a European Colonial map of Mexico and South America prior to 1800 or how East Asians would feel about an ad showing European control of much of Asia and the slogan in an “Absolute World.” But the ad was not meant for Latin American of Asian sensibilities it was meant to speak to European Imperialist sensibilities. One has to wonder how a global company could allow such and add, unless of course it speaks to Swedish/Western European sensibilities squarely rooted in anti-American sentiments.

And for the record, my wife and kids are all dual US/Swedish citizens and I will never drink Absolut again, even during mid-summer!

  84. Absolut lover….if you obviously support Mexico and their people so badly, then why don’t you go live there! Renounce your citizenship and go south over the border…Let me guess by the way, you’re from the west coast aren’t you. You left over hippies are not helping when all you do is support everyone else besides your countrymen. Don’t complain when this country loses its soverinity to mexicans, islamists and other non-americans, who by the way…hate you…despite smiling pretty when they speak to you!

  85. And I’ll continue a little more….I have nothing against Mexico or other nationalities, but I want a fourty foot fence on our border with snipers every 20 feet. If you don’t like your country then fix it instead of coming to ours and raping it! I don’t support giving driver’s licenses to illegals or giving them any health insurance or benefits of any kind! I don’t support letting them live here and I don’t care how much it costs our country to get them out…DO IT! If I were to go to Mexico or any other country I wouldn’t get any benefits of any kind, so why are we giving them so much!
P.S. To all you hippies out there who want this non existent world where everyone loves each other and wars won’t exist and everyone can just sit around with a guitar and smoke dope….WAKE UP! If you don’t sternly protect your country, you may find yourself being some illegals Bi*ch some day!

I read an article about this in my local (San Diego Union-Tribune) newspaper and found my way to this site and have been reading many of the responses here. Boycott Absolut if you feel you must, pour it all down the sink. Whatever. I personally don’t see the the reason people are all getting so butt hurt over it. Its an ad. It was an ad in Mexico for that target base, not for American audiences. Our ads surely would have had something sex based, not with history. Like it or not, once upon a time this land was a part of Mexico, and before them the Native Americans.

I do have this to add to the boycotters, will you continue that movement to May 5th? Yes, Cinco De Mayo as its know here in San Diego and other US border towns. Will you be able to urge all those bars, restaurants, etc to NOT serve Absolut? Will you be able to get all those happy hour crowds to now drink Absolut? You could even push it further and say its un-American for ANY US citizen to drink on a Mexican themed occasion (celebrating the Mexican victory vs. the French at Puebla). Boycott if you wish, I humbly ask that you do not half-ass it and let all those drinkers have their Absolut on Cinco de Mayo. If you cannot achieve that end then please, have Real American’s snipers shoot any anyone observed drinking Absolut. Feel free to flame me. There are more important things we all should really we worried about.

Please, NO MORE of these comments. Yeah, You are right. You can be happy, I lost my job over this ad. I worked on Absolut ads for almost 5 years. There are other people working for them; we all get the point. NO MORE jokes, PLEASE.

We did goofed. Some you win; some you lose.

Now, I have no job; but, great big bills, I may lose everything, I worked so hard for: my family, my nice big home in the suburbs is for sale, kids in $$$ private schools, everything, even my city apartment with a mistress. Its all going. It was just a fun Mexico ad; we did not even think those people could or would read.

FYI: The “NEVER WITHOUT Absolut” campaign, with the Third Reich, April 20th, birthday party — never ran; none of the TV networks would take those ads.

So, no more humor, please. And, clearly, don’t boycott humor or Absolut.

To all those who agree with Absolut’s lame, insulting initial ‘justification’ for their absurd offensive advertising campaign in which they stated: “In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal” I have this suggestion: With that kind of ridiculous reasoning, let’s run ads showing all of Europe as part of nazi germany with a big swastika over it, as I am sure that is someone’s idea of a time in Europe which was ‘more ideal’ or hey- closer to hom and today, let’s show Europe as the Islamic Republic of Europe, as that is definitely the ‘ideal’ Absolut world of millions of Muslims who are attempting to do just that! I, for one, won’t buy the stuff again nor anything manufactured or marketed by their company. A world without these pea-brained, pandering, capitulating and all-around sickening morons is my Absolut world!

The map is inaccurate even for 1848. Strong individual hillbilly Scots Irish culture collided with Spanish/Mexican culture in Texas in 1835 starting with the Battle of Gonzales.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Gonzales
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_and_take_it
The Texas Revolution ended with the capture of Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, separating Texas from Mrxico a decade before the United States and Mexico went to war in 1848. North of San Antonio, most Texas towns have names similar to other areas of the South. Can’t speak for California, but in Texas hillbillies with guns won and Mexicans lost.

The illegal immigration dispute basically boils down to preserving the strong individual culture of the founding fathers while a strange combination of leftists and corporations attempt a back door immigration law change by lax enforcement and judicial activism.

WoW, do you really think we blame this advertising on Mexico?!

    NO!

America is the dream for some, not the oppressors. I guess dreaming about borders being moved does help in getting them in?

Absolut of Sweden was just sold for multi. Billions just a month ago to a out of country bidder, the other bidders were one of most powerful rich families in Sweden AND the swedish government, who put up retirement funds, but…… lost out to a French firm.

This is just in-house business terrorists or corporate sabotage. Swedish politics I guess you could call it , along with the Nazis?

We love our Mexican friends and they just want what we in the Americas have. And that’s why a lot of Mexican/Spanish/others stayed here and even fought and became part of the new Americas.

But dreams of borders being moved, to accommodate your illegal entry? Meh?!

Wake up, that’s a dream and how would we be improved by Mexican control, when your own people are leaving to sneak in to the US and are working illegal sending money home?

Your county is over shadowed by corruption and blame it on the US instead of the reasons why your government has failed you or induces you to want leave there?

Mexicans don’t like immigrants going north from south America because they might settle and/or also it’s a good time to rob them.
You really need to work in your own country to be happy or get changes you wish, and if you can’t even give your own people the basics? They will dream of living free in America.

What is the scandal with that advertisement? Where in that ad is written or suggest to move the borders to accommodate the illegal entry to USA ????No my dear , you are totally wrong. That ad ONLY SHOWS part of your OWN history of 1846;the Treaty of Hidalgo which agreed to cede those 4 complete and 3 in portions Mexican states to USA.If you go to Wikipendia don’t faint when you see with you own eyes what I am talking about. For the peace of all Wikipendia says literally:”The treaty is still a culturally sensitive issue”.

A treaty was signed, land was bought and paid for.

This joke could NOT be turned into a cartoon as it is simply politically and socially incorrect. The reason it is so offensive is because it advocates a white supremacist world view. The ad could be hung in the whitest neighborhood of Utah and it would still be offensive, regardless of whether the “intended” audience agreed with it or not. In an age where companies encourage globalization, they need to realize that regionalized advertising is never going to work again.

May I stir the proverbial? Just a bit? :)

My very first girlfriend was Yolanda Sanchez. A red haired green eyed Chicana that was, and is, Drop Dead Gorgeous, to use a phrase from the mid sixties. We stay in touch. Her biggest concerns? The illegals that are taking over. Her family has fought for freedom since before California became a state. We won, and they lived. Now, it seems that (read some of the writings above) it will all be coming back. I am reminded of the signs that are paraded around Denver during Cinco De Mayo, “Culture, not Color.” I like that.

Prejudice? wow US is the country of the prejudice… the hate and racist roots are big… and they hate people, just for being different!!!

Fear? Well yeah! they fear everybody, the Mexicans, the Muslims, the Jews, and now they are afraid of the Koreans and Afghans too… ain’t that funny???? bunch of chicken shit!

US has been the only one country to drop a nuclear bomb in not only one, but two populated cities and kill thousands of INOCENT people, people just like you and me, and nowadays they have almost 10,000 ILEGAL troops in an ILEGAL war in Irak, if they kill an iraki: its the war, and what it takes…
but if an iraki kills an US soldier: its a war crime….

More information: you can find this map in the 3rd grade text book in every elementary school in Mexico, and they use it, just as information and educational purposes, they are not teaching them kids in school how to take over a country…

But since he likes history so much, I will offer some research topics that may interest him.

    The Mexican War
    The Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
    The Potsdam Declaration

  127. He may also want to research the North/South Pacific current, as well as the Yuma Massacre. Together, they kept Mexico from ever actually controlling or developing that land.

I would also recommend researching the Californio population who lived there during that time.

The Bear Flag Rebellion might also be enlightening.

That should keep him busy for a while.

  128. One can only hope Pill. I do, for some reason have serious doubts that he will even make an attempt. Yolanda’s family (Mentioned above.) has a lot of documentation from that period out at Mission San Luis Rey. There were more than a few very good reasons the Californio’s wanted nothing at all more to do with Spain or Mexico.
